Agile Planning with the Scaled Agile Framework [SAFe]

Many Project and Program Managers in Corporate America might be worried about how well agile folks plan when they read the Agile Manifesto that states it values: 

      "Responding to Change" over "Following a Plan” 

However, once you come to understand how a SAFe lean-agilist "responds to change",  and the VALUE that this approach creates, not to mention how much discipline exists within agile planning cycles, you might never want to go back to any other way.  This can be true especially if you are in a complex development environment, as PMBOK-6 and the new PMI-Agile Practice Guide talks about. 

Q’s to answer:

  • Is it really possible to plan and deliver high-quality features [that not only work, but that are liked by Business] every 2-weeks or less?
  • How do my skills line-up with the lean-agile ways of working, and which roles would I be best suited for?
  • How can we get work to flow thru the organization without so much waste, inefficiency and delays?
  • Where do I get some “agile dust” and/or “team-building dust” to sprinkle on the people who work here so we can go faster and better? 


Learn how SAFe welcomes refined and even changing requirements from both Business partners and Technologists at all levels in the enterprise, even late in development, and how we do this without cumbersome scope-change forms, nor a mindset of people owing each-other stuff and arguing with and “us-vs.-them” culture because something got changed.  Instead, given the new norm of refining requirements very often with a well-defined cadence and structure, plans are intentionally adjusted very frequently based upon real priorities.  This allows companies to stay competitive in the marketplace and deliver meaningful features and fixes very often as a normal way of doing business. 

In this talk, you will come to understand the agile learning, planning and development approach that has firm roots in Deming’s Plan-Do-Check-Act/Adjust [PDCA] cycle.  SAFe stresses a highly collaborative approach used in both bottom-up and top-down planning, incorporating the enterprise vision Program Boards and Road-mapping which are major components of the 2-day, big room planning known as Program Increment Planning [or “PI Planning”].  There is much emphasis on addressing dependencies & risk management that makes SAFe not only strong in planning, but also a very intentional and practical approach to assuring requirements alignment at all levels.

Also, you will see how your skills, many of which are a direct result of the teachings of the Project Management Institute, translate into the Scaled Agile Framework, by Scaled Agile Inc., which has partnered with PMI to advance the state of Product Delivery worldwide.  This is more important than ever, as our systems become increasingly complex and integrated due to things including the Internet of Things [IOT], Cyber Security Challenges, Blockchain, etc.  When you learn to BE agile in your planning and delivery at scale with SAFe, you can be a leader in not only applying the lean-agile practices and principles to the work at hand, but also in facilitating the transformation of the enterprise as leaders within your organization.
