"Surfing a Storm-Tossed World: Making "Lifelong Learning" a Practical Strategy in a Project-Centric Environment"

Loyola University Chicago has recently made project management a required course in its MBA curriculum. One more data point that projects are a core element of the organizational environment. It is also an acknowledgment that change is a permanent feature of work life. Opting for a project management role can be seen as either a tactical or a strategic decision. Tactically, there are skill gaps to address and experiences to obtain. Strategically, this is the next step in a series of transitions that will occur whether you can predict them or not. While this talk will touch on tactical issues, it will focus on the strategic. How can you use this transition to increase your capacity to navigate the transitions that will inevitably follow? Fortunately, the fundamental skills required for effective project management map nicely to the one project that will always be part of your portfolio--"lifelong learning."

Jim helps executives better exploit the dynamic information environment that we inhabit. This requires digging beneath surface noise to uncover driving principles of organizational performance, technology evolution and revolution, and human behavior. He has operated on both sides of the business/academic boundary throughout his career.

Early on, he worked in design, development, and project management roles building complex information systems for clients in various industries. Jim was a Founding Partner and Chief Learning Officer of Diamond Management & Technology Consultants and a Clinical Professor of Technology, Innovation, and Electronic Commerce at Northwestern's Kellogg School of Management. He currently teaches courses in project management, organizational change and information systems management at Loyola’s Quinlan School of Business.

Jim is the co-author of Think Inside the Box: Discover the Exceptional Business Inside Your Organization (WCG Press, 2013) and Managing Information Strategically (John Wiley & Sons, 1993). He has both an MBA and Doctorate from the Harvard Business School in strategy, technology, and organizational design. His undergraduate degree is in Statistics from Princeton University.
