Surveys that ask “What’s the biggest waste of time at work” consistently have “Too many meetings!” as the most popular response. The PMBOK references many different meetings but does little more than recommend an agenda is always prepared. There’s a lot more to it than that!
In this session, we're going to cover the fundamental factors to be considered when designing and delivering high-value meetings, review a "taxonomy of meetings", a spectrum of facilitation styles, and leave you with references you can follow up and tools you can use immediately, and maybe, just maybe, you can be the source of great meetings in your organization!

Learning Objectives:

• The essential elements to consider when designing, preparing for, and facilitation of all kinds of business meetings.
• A taxonomy of meetings, a classification system to identify appropriate designs and participation profiles for meetings.
• A basic guide to facilitation styles appropriate to specific types of meeting
• The metrics to use to determine meeting quality and value

How the topic relevant to project managers and their skills?

One of the biggest sources of waste in the organization is poor communication. Meetings are the essential management tool for communication, for decision making, for collaboration, for all key aspects of value creation, and yet they are consistently considered to be low quality (the meeting itself sucked!) and low value (the outcome was not worth the effort required to achieve it). Professional project managers who master meeting facilitation skills can make a dramatic impact on the reduction of waste in their organizations, as well as improving their quality of experience of all their workplace colleagues. Given that a major part of a project manager’s work is to facilitate and create communication in meetings, this can be a game-changer in their effectiveness.
