Topic: Project Management Futurescape

PMI Talent Triangle: Power Skills (1.25 PDU)

Abstract:

Work is the lifeblood of any organization and project management has the potential to make work a meaningful and uplifting experience that creates value for all stakeholders. Project management is uniquely positioned to boost organizational productivity and competitive advantage because it can be instrumental in attaining vision, mission, and strategy; fostering creativity and innovation, thwarting counter-productive agendas, and in embracing and thriving on change. It can also provide the gears for reducing workplace chaos and stress, and thereby facilitating the creation of a happy, healthy, and highly motivated workforce, as well as a more diverse, equitable, and fair work environment.

Although our discipline has made giant and commendable strides over the past few decades, the prevalence of execution lapses and subpar project outcomes – not to mention work environments that are often stressful and toxic - are loud, clear, and jarring reminders that the full potential of project management has yet to be adequately appreciated and harnessed.

This presentation will explore the factors that account for this shortfall and offer recommendations for evolving to a future state which positions the discipline to occupy its rightful spot in the echelon of revered business disciplines such as finance and marketing – thus creating opportunities for project managers to enhance their value-add to organizations and to pave career pathways with potential to lead all the way up to the C-suite. Attaining this future state will require an evolution of the discipline and a transformation in the thinking, attitudes, and behaviors of its practitioners. It will also require the next generation of leaders to exercise a vision that encompasses ESG and DEI, to skillfully coalesce and weave together strands from other disciplines such as IT, data science, and design thinking; and to liaise actively and meaningfully with other functions like finance, accounting, marketing, etc. in order to extend the reach and impact of project management to all areas of organizational activity.

Learning Objectives: After viewing this presentation, participants will be able to:

  • Summarize the current state, reach, and level of utilization of the project management discipline;
  • Analyze the reasons and factors that account for the vastly unrealized potential and reach of project management;
  • Envision an attainable futurescape of project management which realizes its full potential to transform and uplift work and society, and to optimize value creation for all stakeholders;
  • Distill, correlate, and coalesce the various elements and enablers for transitioning to this futurescape; and
  • Sketch the implications of this futurescape for leadership and value creation; organizational innovation and success; and workplace wellbeing, diversity, equity, and inclusion.
